Starting May 1, 2025, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has introduced revised ATM transaction rules. These changes primarily focus on free transaction limits and increased charges for exceeding those limits. If you frequently withdraw cash or check your balance at ATMs, here’s what you need to know.
Key Changes in ATM Transaction Rules
- Customers can avail five free transactions per month (including financial and non-financial transactions) at their own bank’s ATMs.
- At other bank ATMs, customers get three free transactions in metro cities and five free transactions in non-metro areas.Revised Charges Beyond Free Limits
- If customers exceed their free transaction limit, banks can now charge ₹23 per transaction, up from the previous ₹21.
- This fee applies to both financial transactions (cash withdrawals) and non-financial transactions (balance inquiries, mini-statements, PIN changes).
- The revised charges also apply to transactions at Cash Recycler Machines (CRMs), except for cash deposits.
- However HDFC Bank clarified that only cash withdrawals at its ATMs will be chargeable beyond the free limit and non-financial transactions remain free.
